Can we put the Christmas tree up today? Can we put the Christmas tree up today? Can we put the Christmas tree up today? Can we put the Christmas tree up today? Can we put the Christmas tree up today?

…was how I was woken up this morning. Oh to be 5 again! So, even though it’s still only November I’ve given in and have started embracing Christmas!

This chutney fills the house with a beautiful spiced festive smell, and is delicious with cheese and biscuits or as an accompaniment to chicken, turkey or pork. It’s also simple and quick to make.

Christmas chutney

You will need:

  • 250g cranberries fresh or frozen
  • 150g sugar
  • 200ml water
  • 2 small apples, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 pinch ground cloves

Makes approx 1 jar

Sterilise your jar – I do this by putting it through a hot wash in the dishwasher, but you can do it in the oven instead (20 mins at 180 degrees). No effort at all really, but be ready use the jar as soon as the cycle is finished.

Simply put all the ingredients in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes for frozen berries and 30 minutes for fresh berries. Once it looks jammy and sticky put it into a hot sterilised jar. Once cooled keep in the fridge.

Tips: If you’re using fresh cranberries wear an apron, as the berries have a tendency to pop explosively once they start bubbling! Alternatively I guess you could just put a lid on the pan…

  2. Do you have a recommendation for how long this will keep? Do I keep in the fridge? Got a pack of leftover cranberries I’m going to use to try this recipe today 🙂
